Aerodynamic Measurement Technology

Papers are solicited on topics related to advanced and novel aerodynamic measurement techniques for laboratory, ground-test or flight-test applications. Submissions are encouraged for all types of flows, including all speeds from incompressible to hypersonic, all thermodynamic conditions including plasmas and combustion, all scales from microfluidics to geophysical flows, and all diagnostic techniques from surface sensors to laser-based imaging. Papers should emphasize advancements or innovations in the measurement technique itself or its implementation, rather than the particular fluid dynamic problem to which the technique is applied. Air Transportation Integration & Operations - Unique and/or Transformational Flight Systems

Technical papers are requested relating to innovative manned/unmanned aircraft concepts and technologies for emerging markets such as on-demand mobility. Topics of interest include market studies for on-demand aviation, aircraft configuration design, electric propulsion integration and component technologies, autonomous systems research, and simplified vehicle operations. Papers are also requested on STOL and VSTOL aircraft (regardless of propulsion type) for transformational missions such as on-demand mobility, including design, analysis, and testing. To provide a more comprehensive forum for the exchange of ideas, AIAA is accepting submissions on topics that are controlled by U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and would not otherwise be suitable for presentation in an open forum. All abstracts must be unrestricted and cleared for public release, though the final papers and presentations will be ITAR restricted. The ITAR program’s technical content will include theoretical, numerical, and experimental contributions that describe original research results and/or innovative design concepts relevant to aerospace applications. The Modeling and Simulation Technologies Conference seeks papers on the latest findings in the development and application of modeling and simulation particularly related to flight simulator technologies. Areas of interest are rotary-wing and fixed-wing human-in-the-loop simulation, development of full-flight simulators, human factors, air traffic management, unmanned aerial systems training and operations, and space vehicle dynamics. Plasmadynamics and Lasers

Papers are solicited describing experimental, computational, and/or theoretical research and development in the areas of plasmadynamics and lasers with the focus on application to aerospace systems. Fundamental studies and works related to a specific application are relevant to the meeting scope. Submission may also include studies of dual-use technologies that also address problems in other fields such as propulsion, energy, environment, or health. Comprehensive abstracts that state the purpose and scope of the work, outline the methods used, and identify relevant contributions, including figures and preliminary results, are recommended for accurate evaluation. Subject area experts interested in documenting comprehensive reviews of state of the art, historical perspectives are encouraged to contact the technical discipline chair with details. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Astronautical and Space Plasmas (rarefied plasma flow, space plasmas, dusty plasmas, etc.)
  • Computational Methods (plasma-flow coupling simulation, particle simulation, parallel computing algorithms, etc.)

Thermophysics and Heat Transfer

The 12th AIAA/ASME Thermophysics and Heat Transfer Conference continues a 48-year tradition between the AIAA Thermophysics Technical Committee (TPTC) and the ASME Heat Transfer Division (HTD). Abstracts for topics in thermophysics and heat transfer are solicited on topics related to all aspects of thermal energy and heat transfer and their related aerospace applications for aviation and space flight. Contributions based on analytical, numerical and/or experimental studies are welcomed as are timely survey and review articles. Student Paper Competitions

The following Student Paper Competitions are being held in conjunction with the Forum:

Student Eligibility Requirements

  • Student author(s) must be a member of AIAA in order to enter the competition.
  • Student author(s) must be full-time students in good academic standing at their university/institution at the time of submission.
  • Manuscript content represents the work of the author
  • Student(s) must be the primary author(s) of the paper and the work must have been performed while the author(s) was a student.
  • Student author(s) must be able to attend the Forum to present their work should it be selected for presentation.

  • Student Submission Requirements

    • Student Paper Competition submissions must adhere to the overall Forum Abstract Submission Requirements.
    • Students must select the “Student Paper Competition” presentation type during the electronic submission process. Do not submit the abstract more than once. Only submissions with “Student Paper Competition” presentation type indicated will be eligible for the competition.
    • All submissions must be made by the Forum abstract submission deadline of 9 November 2017, 2000 hrs Eastern Standard Time Zone, USA.

    Aeroacoustics

    Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to submit papers for consideration in the Aeroacoustics Student Paper Competition. Student papers should report on original work conducted by students in collaboration with faculty advisors or mentors. The student submitting a paper for consideration must be the primary author, must be a student at the time of the abstract submission, and must present the paper at the conference. The student author of the best paper will receive a monetary reward and a certificate presented at the conference. The best student paper award will be selected based on (1) relevance to the field of aeroacoustics, (2) technical quality and completeness of the work, and (3) overall clarity of the paper and its presentation. Papers not received by the student paper submission deadline or not presented by the student at the conference will not be considered for the award. Interested students should submit abstracts electronically through AIAA’s website at www.aiaa.org. Please submit to the appropriate topic and select “Student Paper Submission” as the presentation type. In addition, at the time you submit your extended abstract, students should send an e-mail to the Education Subcommittee (Cliff Brown, clifford.a.brown@nasa.gov) stating your intent to enter the competition for the student award and using “STUDENT PAPER MANUSCRIPT” as the subject line. Authors participating in the Student Award competition must then submit their final manuscript to the Aviation conference website no later than May 16, 2018, no extensions.

    Atmospheric Flight Mechanics

    Overview: The AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics (AFM) Technical Committee is sponsoring a Best Student Paper Competition at the 2018 AIAA AVIATION Forum. Entrants will be judged by AFM Technical Committee members, and the winner will receive a certificate and financial award. To be eligible for this award, the entrant must be the primary author of the paper and the work must have been performed while the author was a student. Entrants will present their papers in the relevant conference technical sessions with judges in attendance.

    Entrants: To be eligible for this award, the student must be the primary author of the paper, and the work must have been performed while the author was a student. As such, recent graduates are eligible to enter the competition. To enter the competition, the “Student Paper Competition” option must be selected instead of “Technical Manuscript” when submitting a manuscript.

    Evaluation Process: The scoring for the award will be equally based on written paper content and oral presentation. The written paper will be judged on: 1) relevance of the topic to atmospheric flight mechanics; 2) organization and clarity; 3) appreciation of the technical issues and sources of errors; and 4) meaningful conclusions of the research. The oral presentation will be judged for overall clarity, including: 1) background and problem definition statement; 2) explanation of technical approach; and 3) explanation of research results.

    Student manuscripts will be judged prior to the conference. Student presentations will be judged in regular technical sessions. Scores will be tallied during the conference, and the students will be contacted via email after the conclusion of the conference with the winner identified and anonymous reviewer comments provided.

    Award: A certificate is provided to the winning student, and a $500 cash prize is provided by Calspan. If the winning student is able to attend the following conference, he/she will receive the certificate on stage at the Awards Luncheon. If not, a picture of the student is provided to AIAA to be added to the Awards Luncheon package so the student is recognized. In this case, the certificate is mailed to the student by AIAA.

    Rules:

    1. The entrant must be the primary author of the paper and the work must have been performed while the author was a student.
    2. The entrant must submit their final paper by the conference's manuscript deadline and must present the paper themselves at the conference.
    3. Entrants cannot be a member in the Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee.
    4. Written paper will be judged on: (1) Relevance of the topic to atmospheric flight mechanics (2) Organization and clarity (3) Appreciation of the technical issues and sources of errors and (4) Meaningful conclusions of the research.
    5. Written papers will be judged by the AFM TC prior to the conference so that the written results have been tabulated before the conference has begun.
    6. Oral presentation will be judged on: (1) Background and problem definition statement (2) Explanation of technical approach (3) Explanation of research results.
    7. In general, scoring will be equally weighted on written paper content and oral presentation. Only in the event of a tie in the total score, the written paper score will take precedence to break the tie.
    8. Based upon the manuscripts submitted at the conference manuscript submission deadline, the top five competitors will be selected as finalists for the competition. Only the finalists from the written competition will be judged by the AFM TC members on their presentations.

    Atmospheric and Space Environments

    Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to submit papers for consideration in the Atmospheric and Space Environments Student Paper Competition. Entries to the Student Paper Competition will be presented in regular technical sessions with other papers in their topic area and archived as AIAA papers. To be eligible for this award, the student must meet the standards established by AIAA and listed above. The written papers will be judged based on the following criteria: (1) originality (is the work original, or is it something that has been addressed in the past); (2) technical quality (appropriate level of technicality and free from errors); (3) organization, completeness, grammar and usage (style and clarity); (4) literature review/acknowledgement of prior work and explanation of the relevance to the work presented in the paper; (5) accuracy of experimental or numerical results (ref. AIAA standards for journals); (6) importance/contribution to field. The student author of the best paper will receive a certificate and a cash award after the conference.

    Flow Control

    The AIAA Flow Control Student Paper Competition is open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students. The submitting student must be the major contributor and first author of the paper and make the presentation at the conference. Awards will be based on a combined evaluation of the extended abstract (initial screening), the final conference paper, and the presentation. Criteria for judging include the technical approach and the quality and discussion of the results as well as the presentation and paper style and clarity. Cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners. The results will be announced after the Flow Control Conference. The competition entries must be marked “Student Paper” in the title and submitted as “Student Paper Competition”. All submission deadlines for the hosting Flow Control Conference must be met. Student paper competition entries will be treated as regular AIAA conference papers in the conference proceedings.

    Multidisciplinary Design Optimization

    The MAO Student Paper Competition, sponsored by NASA Glenn Research Center, encourages undergraduate and graduate students to submit papers to the technical topics listed in this call for papers. Co-authored papers are welcome; however, the first author must be an AIAA member and a registered student at the time the abstract is submitted. The student must have played a key role in the research and writing of the paper. When submitting an abstract for the MAO Student Paper Competition, authors must choose a "Presentation Type" from the drop-down menu on the abstract submission website and click on "Student Paper Competition" and select the topic "Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization”. This will ensure that the abstract is submitted to the MAO conference. If you are unable to enter the student paper competition, because you must submit to a different subtopic, then please email the chair (Justin Gray, justin.s.gray@nasa.gov ) and ask to be included.

    The deadline for the student paper abstracts is the same as the conference abstract deadline and the student paper abstracts will be reviewed in the same way as the regular conference abstracts. The full papers of the Student Paper Competition are due at the same time as the regular papers. No extensions will be granted (to the full manuscript submission deadline), if you wish to remain in contention of the prize.

    The papers will be judged by expert reviewers, and finalists will be selected to present at a special MAO session during Aviation 2018. The award decision will be based on both the paper and the presentation. The judging criteria are: i) the originality of work and its importance to the field; ii) the clarity of the presentation, with special emphasis given to illustrations/animations and their contribution to the understanding of the material; iii) clarity of research objectives and the organization and conciseness of the paper. A soft word limit of 5000 will be imposed (not including abstract, figures, captions, or bibliography), with the judges’ discretion used to decide if additional length added meaningful value to the paper. First prize is $2000 and the runner-up will receive $1000. Abstract acceptance notification will occur at the same time as the regular papers. Students will be notified if they are finalists, or not, approximately 2 weeks after the final papers are due. The finalists will present their papers in a special MAO session during Aviation. The talks will be strictly limited to 20 minutes, with 5 minutes for judges’ questions, and 5 minutes for questions from the general audience.
